Saskatchewan is the second largest oil producer in Canada accounting for 20 percent of production.       There are approximately 50 businesses and organizations in the SEREDA region that provide oilfield services to the area.  Major petroleum companies in the Weyburn area include Anadarko Canada Energy, EnCana Corporation and Precision Drilling.  There are approximately 1200 production wells in the Weyburn and area oil patch, and approximately 5000 production wells in southeast Saskatchewan.

Recently, the EnCana Plant’s CO2 project is gaining national and international attention.  The company is using Carbon Dioxide to force oil out of the rocks of older fields when water flooding was previously used.  EnCana is using Carbon Dioxide for environmental reasons, because CO2 stays under ground where it can not harm the environment.
